Abstract

In this article, we study labor participation of couples and wealth accumulation. In particular, we try to establish empirically the factors that cause both spouses to participate in the labor market and if this decision affects savings. The results indicate that couples with higher education levels and incomes are more likely to participate in the labor market. Nevertheless, specialized households (in which only one of the spouses participates in the labor market) accumulate more wealth once controlled for differences in income.
