Productive expansions and contractions in Michoacan, Mexico, 2003-2015. An analysis from the regional economy
Abstract
The paper aims to identify the economic sectors with absolute and relative specialization in Michoacán, Mexico, from 2003 to 2015, as well as the expansions and productive contractions that occurred in this entity during that period. The methods used to achieve the objectives are the quotients and coefficients of regional analysis. The results indicate that the retail trade registered a preponderant importance in absolute and relative specialization. The average specialization coefficient for 2003-2015 was 14.3%, as the state was highly diversified then. The results indicate that, from 2003 to 2008, Michoacán was classified as an "expanding region", from 2009 to 2015 as a "contracting region", and from 2003 to 2015 as a "contracting region", with the probability of continuing in that same position for 2016-2021. The level of contraction that occurred in 2009-2015 subsumed the degree of expansion of 2003-2008.
