The role of maquiladoras as an industrial growth link for Mexico. The case of Yucatán
Abstract
The current industrial policy of Mexico views the maquiladoras as a fundamental way of giving people jobs, however, the maquiladora whose function is to process imported goods for rapid export does not carry out the consolidation of technological advances that enables the strengthening of domestic markets and the competitiveness of foreign markets. Therefore, there is need for the host country of the maquilas in this case Mexico, to implement a policy of chains linking the small and medium enterprises to large multinational firms who represent the maquiladoras. This process can achieve a virtuous circle between wages, capital accumulation and economic development.
